505 World Championship 1996

Photos taken at the 505 World Championship in Townsville Australia by Ali Meller.

More photos from the 1996 Worlds

Australian National and Pre-worlds; Team USA waiting for the wind. Jeff Miller ponders his karma. A day or two before he was supposed to fly to Australia, 7771's skipper, Pete Melvin, shattered his kneecap in a catamaran accident, and could not sail. Mike Martin asked Jeff if he was available, Jeff was, and a couple of days later he was in Australia! Jeff and Mike finished 5th despite not practicing together prior to the event.

Australian National and Pre-worlds; waiting for the wind. Ebbe Rosen and Olle Wenrup drifting around, waiting for the wind, and wishing they were at the beach!

The infamous Tally Board. 10% penalty for not tallying out, and 10% for not tallying in

Tally Board closeup The desired slot is the one on the right....

Invitation Race 1st windward mark. A tight fleet at the first windward mark. The leaders are probably having fun!

A few moments later... Half of team Sweden breaks off at the windward mark to watch, and to tune. That's Bergstrom/Westerdahl on the far left. It seems that some teams overstood.....

Invitation Race, first leeward mark Magnetic Island in the background, with the RC boat on the left. A significant portion of the fleet were using Technora or Kevlar sails.

Invitation Race, 2nd windward mark. The fleet starts to open up a little.

The new Kyrwood hull raffled off at the Worlds. Kyrwood, one of the major sponsors, provided a new hull that was raffled off. It was won by an Australian.

Kyrwood also provided a discount certificate good for partial payment on a new boat, as a prize to the oldest hull in the Worlds. 7200 (Ali Meller/Mike Mills) was the SECOND oldest hull at the Worlds. Four XXXX was a very significant sponsor of this event. Competitors were happy to be drinking XXXX lager and gold after racing. I believe the 505 class obliterated any and all bar records during the 18 days.
