Notes on the 2002 European Championship

It's a great shame there were not more boats for this great event - the sailing in the last few days in particular was fantastic. ...

I was able to get a bit of attention for the event by the Italian press.
I enclose the article in Italian, I am sure you can understand the content.

/Riva del Garda - The Swedes Krister Bergstrom and Thomas Moss are the new European champions in the 505 class. The Championship was organized by the Fraglia Vela of Riva del Garda. In second place were the Germans Martin and Rainer George. Third overall are the British Simon Payne/Bill Mastermann. The 505 is a splendid high-performance racing dingy. Excellent spread in the Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian countries, however poor in Italy./

Now a short report:

There were only fourty-five 505s on the startline, and not so many boats as expected. We had one week of wonderful sailing in 24 degrees water and 35 degrees air temperature. On the first day we had one race with 10 growing up to 20 knots wind. Krister Bergstroms forestay broke in this race when he was in the lead after the first lap, so he had to retire. On the following two days we had three nice races with about 15 knots of wind. After the layday we had two very hard races with maximum wind under the cliff over 35-40 knots. On the last day it was very windy again.

Krister and Thomas sailed very good with the places DNF 5, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, DNF.

Goerges had a safe second place overall. The following boats were very close.
We had races only in the afternoon, and so we had big parties every night.

Now I will not terrorize You any longer with my bad english. A detailed report will come from Ian Pinnell. But everybody who wasn't at the europeans missed the best event of the year.

See You,
