5-0-5 Europeans, KIEL / 1979 ENGLISH REPORT | SWEDISH REPORT Swedish 505 Bulletin
For the first time the 505 class has a Scandinavian European champion in the form of the Danish Bojsen-Moller brothers from Hellerup SC. Organised by the Kiel
YC, the event was sailed from the Olympic centre at Schilksee between August 3rd and 11th. Defending champions Peter Colclough and Phil Brown could only manage second place this time, probably through lack of practice caused by Peter's road accident earlier this year. Colclough and Brown were up against some of their toughest opposition from the Bojsen-Moller brothers who sail every day in the summer and twice or three times a week during the winter. Excellent boat handling and good speed gave them the ability to recover from an indifferent start or any other apparent setback to their relentless progress towards the championship. The pattern was set in the first race when Bojsen-Moller won from fellow Danes Jorgen Schonherr and Anders Kempe with Colclough and Brown third. This race was one of two sailed on the second day of the regatta as the first day had been spent at sea waiting around for a breeze that never came. The race was stopped at the end of the second beat as the wing mark had not been laid in time. Scandinavian boats took three of the first four places with Karl-Erik Nilsson and Jan Calvert coming fourth and David Pitman was fifth when the race was re-started. Neil and Paul Willmott completed a good showing for the British with sixth place, dropping down from second at the windward mark. The Force 3 increased for the second race of the day which gave the Swedish brothers Staffan and Anders Eklund their first win of the week. The Scandinavians revelled in the increased wind with Bojsen-Moller second, Colclough third, Swedes Thomas Widstrand and Per-Anders Hallberg fourth, Schonherr fifth, Krister and Martin Bergstrom sixth and the Willmotts ninth. Sailed on a grey, miserable day with rain and the wind around Force 2, the third race was won by the Swedish Bergstrom brothers who overtook the early race leaders Ebbe Rosen and Olle Wenrup on the third reach. Rosen's second place was the start of a consistent series of races, having failed to distinguish himself in the first two. Bojsen-Moller and Colclough were locked together all the way round with the Dane finally slipping away on the last beat. Eklund dropped to twelfth and the French had another good result with Georges Le Troquer and Eric Devaux fifth (ninth in the first race) and Jean-Francois and Pierre Fountaine ninth. Pitman was fourth at the first mark and class newcomer John Patterson finished an excellent tenth. The fourth day's racing had to be abandoned in the face of a thunderstorm. After the fleet had ridden out the thunder, lightning and high winds, there was no more wind left. Thursday started well with sun and wind and a Force 4 to 5 forecast. Unfortunately this never came and the race was sailed in failing winds with almost nothing at the end. It was an easy start to finish win for Bojsen-Moller in his favourite light winds. Rosen was second for the second time running. Unfortunately this race was Colclough's worst; having gone the wrong way on the first beat, he managed to pull through to eighth. The French Corronnier brothers took a surprising third place, Nilsson was fourth, Eklund fifth, Bergstrom sixth and Mike Lawton and Terry Lawton, the second British boat, fourteenth. The following day the fleet launched with very high winds and sailed out to the race area to find mountainous seas and increasing winds. The inadequate rescue facilities threatened to go home if the race was started so the fleet turned for home, many under spinnaker for a truly memorable reach home. This was the third blank day at sea. With two races scheduled for the last day, a hard day was ensured for everybody. And it turned out to be just that with good winds and sunshine. The wind increased to around 4 to 5 for the last race which was another win for heavy weather experts, the Eklunds. They never looked like being overtaken by second place man Rosen who pushed Bojsen-Moller down to third place. Schonherr was fourth ahead of Danish 470 Olympic sailor Lars Lonberg. Nilsson was seventh and Pitman tenth. Bergstrom unfortunately hit the guard boat and had a disqualification to add to his first race DNF; this pushed him down the overall list to 19, instead of a single figure result. Twenty-five-year-old Jorgen and his twenty-three-year-old brother Jacob Bojsen-Moller sailed a Rondar boat with an Alpha Minus mast reinforced with carbon fibre on which they set Elvstrom sails. They used a superbly finished home-made gybing centreboard and a home-made fixed rudder. The centreboard was very long and had a high aspect ratio. Terry Lawton Overall Results:

Fredagens segling fick stllas in p.g.a. fr hrd vind.
