CONTACT FREMANTLE 505: Matt Hansen:, Mark Stowell

A lot of thought has gone into the structure and layout of the new Fremantle 505 produced by Brett Burvill at Windrush yachts. We have distilled the best design aspects of existing manufacturers of 505s and other classes and added some entirely new components. The aim is to produce a stronger, better engineered, cleaner boat that is easier to rig and maintain. Thanks go to a core group of WA 505 sailors, Brett Burvill and Ben Punch at Windrush and all the manufacturers and sailors of 505s around the world who have developed the class so far. We have borrowed ideas from many of you so feel free to use some of ours! This is a work in evolution.

The boats are built from just 3 pieces therefore there are fewer joins than any existing 505 resulting in greater strength. The sidetanks, foredeck, chute entry, thwarts, transom and centercase cap are a single component with the forward thwart angled down to the floor to triangulate the stresses on the case caused by the lateral loading of the high aspect boards and mirror the latest 470 design. The cockpit is markedly more open for greater crew mobility and access especially for moving forward for kite launching and light airs. The transom component of the deck moulding meets the hull directly without intervening core material avoiding potential exposure of the core material of the hull and providing a cleaner trailing edge. Longitudinal internal bulkheads lock the sidetanks to the hull and greatly stiffen and strengthen this structure. The maststep, forward bulkhead and chute are a single piece with the chute located immediately under the foredeck (like the Rondar). The chute acts as an I beam thereby stiffening the foredeck. The chute has been widened to make handling of the new kites even easier and the small area of contact at the entry point on the chute combined with the clear unimpeded line of pull of the retrieval line back to the cockpit further lower the friction in the system. The maststep itself is a flat topped pyramid with a hollow base locked into the aft bulkhead. The cavity beneath the maststep offers easy access for rigging and the extra available length ( one continuous cavty from forward bulkhead to aft end of centercase) opens up many useful options for control lines, cascading systems and elastic takeups. We have incorporated a fully internalised sidestay system with a tuning block below the sidedeck (ie in the sidetank) and the line led through a tube to the maststep in front of the aft bulkhead (ie under the foredeck and out of the way). This neatens up the boat even more. A rebate in the foredeck for the Z spar mast-ram fitting makes this high load attachment much more secure and stable.

The prices include fitted maststep, 1 venturi, toestrap attachment points, 3 inspection ports, forestay tang, internal sidestay turning blocks and tubes and Z spar fixture for mast ram fitted to foredeck in rebate.

New 505 Design

These photos depict the deck plug for the new Fremantle 505 nearing completion at Windrush Yachts. Note that the decks, thwarts and case are a single piece without the need for joints which means it should be much stronger than any existing boat. The deck mould is being made on this and a further mould incorporating the mast-step, forward bulkhead and spinnaker chute will complete the set. The entire boat will be formed from just three pieces all of which interlock sungly to further stabilise the construct. All moulds are tooled with high temp resins to allow the use of prepeg layup and oven cure.
