505 Boom Mounted Mainsheet Block, Like the 49r uses.  Using Ronstan's pivoting low-lead ratchet and cam block. September 2005

Sailor Notes: Hi guys, I just though you maybe interested in how we are using the RF62175. Attached is a photo of our 49er off the boom style 505 mainsheet system. We used this system for the first time at the 505 North Americans a few weeks ago and will never change back. The winning boat used the same system as ours. I am not sure at this stage how far this will go but there does seem to be some interest gaining momentum. There is talk of some other classes being able to benefit from this development as well.

My next move is to use this on a mid boom sheeted dinghy as well and see if it has some of the same benefits (I am coming back to Australia to do the sharpie nationals at Christmas in Brisbane, this will give me a good opportunity then). I can't see why you couldn't use this on most dinghy and small keelboat classes that the rules will allow, end and mid boom sheeting. Mid boom sheeting the RF62175 cam arms will not require customization.

Advantages1.. Minimizes leach tension when centralizing boom. 2.. less sheet tension required for same leach tension. 3.. Lead angle assists hiking. 4.. When sitting in a more central position in the boat. (Light air & down wind). Much more comfortable sheet angle. 5.. Cleaner cockpit. (Mainsheet swivel arm is the first thing to snag control lines) On end boom sheeting craft there is nothing between end of boom purchase and vang connection at boom leaving a much clearer tacking platform 6.. System weight 308g vs. 600g

Disadvantages. 1.. Variance from what people are used to. 2.. requires more precise vang control when boom is not on center. (Not a disadvantage when boat is sailed correctly)

As you can see in the photos attached the cleating action required needs to be in a forward motion and the angle of the current arms does not allow this action so a little customizing is required. Due to the modifications as well as the need to produce a custom slide fitting to suit attachment to the regular Proctor/ Selden and z spar boom, not being an out of the box solution makes this a little difficult to sell in any qty

The little "white" piece of plastic was made by the sailor, He screwed the plastic piece to a slider in the boom then screwed the RF62175 to the plastic piece.
