The first World Championship was held in Sydney in 1938 with New Zealand, Queensland and NSW competing. China, England and America were invited and accepted but were unable to attend due to the threat of war in Europe. New Zealand, Queensland and NSW formed Board of Control in 1949 to manage and control the running of the J.J. Giltinan World Championship. The Royal Suva Yacht Club was appointed controlling body for Fiji and subsequently conducted the 1952 series in Suva. America began sending boats to compete in 1971 and were followed by the U.K. which first contested the championship in 1975. Western Australia became the third Australian State to become affiliated in 1984 and in recent years Japan has become a regular competitor. Over the past 15 years, there have also been individual competitors from France, Sweden, Holland, Italy and Canada. |
