Black Bottle carried triumphant ashore 1966

The Black Bottle Victory

A rare photo showing Black Bottle being carried ashore by an enthustiastic crowd after the last race of the 1966 World´s in Adelaide. Jim Hardy and Max Whitnell won convincingly being shadowed by Paul Elvström/Pip Pearson in second place. As the boat name suggests it has to do with wines and Jim Hardy is today steering the family company, Hardy´s Wineries with the same scill as he was then in Black Bottle.

Just a short story from the Brighton & Seacliff S.C. As it so happened the webmaster of this site had his 21st birthday the last day in Adelaide. Jim Hardy´s mother, Eilene who run the winery until a few years ago, got to hear of this and gave Pelle two bottle of vintage wine as a present. The latter who was too young to have learnt to appreciate wine in general and vintage wine in particular, more or less sabred the poor bottles pouring the wine out to friends and on the floor.

What shameful behavior on such a fine gesture from the mother of the World Champion! Jim, please accept my sincere appologies this long after. It might be interesting to know that I celebrated another birthday at Tahiti the following day having crossed the date line, so I´m in a way actually one year older.
