Rules of the 505 European Cup

1 Objective
1.1 The goal of the 505 European Cup is the promotion of international racing within the 505 Class in Europe.
2 Racing
2.1 The European Cup is an annual Series, consisting of five regattas held in five different European countries.
2.2 Each regatta should normally be held over 2 – 4 days, unless it is also a European or World Championship (see 2.4).
2.3 Each year the locations for each regatta are to be chosen by the five European national Associations with with the largest number of paying members (the Scandinavian Associations counting as one). The dates of each regatta should be set by the end of November in the preceding year. In the event of a conflict arising between the dates nominated by different Associations, the priority will be determined by the International Executive Committee (IEC).
2.4 If one of the qualifying Associations is also organising a European or World Championship, it may choose to count this Championship as its regatta for the Series.
2.5 European associations should not organise major 505 regattas races at on dates when a European-Cup regatta is scheduled.
3 Scoring
3.1 Points for participating in the European Cup shall be awarded to the Eligible Competitor, who may be either the helmsman or the crew, but not both. The Eligible Competitor in each boat must be nominated when entering each regatta and cannot be changed during the course of the regatta. It is the Eligible Competitor’s responsibility to ensure that the Organising Authority for a particular regatta correctly allocates the points. Once the regatta is complete the Eligible Competitor cannot be changed retrospectively.
3.2 At each regatta the score for each Eligible Competitor shall be calculated according to the following formula

  R = 100 x ( (s+1-x) / s ) with

R:       score for the regatta
s:       number of boats which passed the finishing line at least in one heat of the regatta
x:       final position of the particular boat in the regatta
3.3 Each Eligible Competitor’s highest three scores from regattas in the Series shall be added together to give his or her total score for the Series. The winner will be the Eligible Competitor with the highest number of points
3.4 In the event of a tie, the Eligible Competitor with the highest score score in a single regatta will be placed highest. If these scores are equal, the second highest score in a single regatta will determine the position, and so on. In the event of this procedure still not leading to a decision, the positions will be drawn by lot.
4 Entries and Eligibility
4.1 Both the helmsman and crew must be members of the 505 International Class Yacht Racing Association for a boat to be eligible to compete in each regatta and for the Eligible Competitor’s scores from that regatta to be included in the Series.
4.2 In case of a limitation on entries at any regatta, places will be allocated by the IEC in proportion to the number of members declared by each National Association.
5 Organisation
5.1 The International Executive Committee will nominate a Series Co-ordinator whose main duty is to organise the dates for the regattas for the next year and to re-distribute the quotas in case of a limitation of entries. A second person will be appointed to calculate and publish regularly the results of the regattas and the current overall positions in the Series.
5.2 Registration for each regatta has to be done directly with the organising club, and competitors must abide by the rules of the regatta organisers and the Sailing Instructions, the ISAF Rules of Sailing, the Rules of the International 505 Class Yacht Racing Association and the Rules of the European Cup.
6 Interpretation
6.1 In case of conflict between this text and any translation thereof, the English language version will prevail. In case of a dispute, the International Executive Committee will consult the Series Co-ordinator and then take a final decision.
7 Alterations
7.1 At the end of each Series, the Series Co-ordinator shall send a report on the Series to the International Secretary confirming the results, commenting on any matters which may be improved and recommending whether there should be any changes to these rules. The International Executive Committee shall consider the report and decide whether an alteration to these rules should be made.
