Recent 505 News..... May '97 This news update is also available on the 505 North American web site at http://old.int505.org/old_site/preleas4.htm. The web version is better formatted, and has working links to lots of additional information. Next Issue of International 505 Class Magazine in the Mail Shortly:The first issue of the new class magazine International 505 was mailed to class association members around the world in March of 1996. The second issue has been printed and should be in the mail to current 5o5 class members very shortly. If you are not currently a class member, contact your national secretary, or the International Secretary, Les Everitt. For US 505 sailors, fill in the form in any issue of Tank Talk, write a check, and mail both to our Secretary/Treasurer, Ken Elliott, at the address on the membership form. Container of Late Model UK 505s ArrivesThe first container of used UK 505s arrived in New York (actually New Jersey) the week of April 21st. Three Rondars, including one epoxy Rondar, and a Kevlar Parker 25 were in the container (along with masts, rudder heads, trailer parts etc.). Welcome to the 505 class Tom Price (Annapolis MD), T Brockenbrough (Hampton VA/Charleston SC), and David Chatham (Rhode Island). Congratulations to Chris Museler (Rhode Island) on the upgrade (Chris sold 6311, his Parker-hulled Lindsay, to Ian Hopkins, and bought Rondar 8240), so welcome to Ian Hopkins! Tom Price was out racing 8351 on the May 3-4 weekend at the windy WRSC Spring, while both David and Chris were racing 8024 and 8240 respectively at the windy Bristol regatta. I hope to see T Brockenbrough on the water in 8316 shortly. Allan Johnson and I thought we had a deal on a 5th used UK boat, but it fell through at the last minute. We are still looking for a used UK 5o5, as are several other US sailors. There may be enough interest in the St. Petersburg FL area to do the next container to that location. While we have not yet added up all the costs yet, it appears that it was cheap! Contact Paul Young at Rondar and check the Chris Romans used UK 505 web site at http://www.greyseal.demon.co.uk/505sale.htm and the Intersail UK used 505s list at http://www.intersail.co.uk/505/news/for_sale.html if you are interested in a late model used UK 505. Thanks to Paul for finding several of the boats, checking them over, and packing and shipping them for us. 110 Used 5o5s Sold in North America in last two years! The "505s for Sale in North America" list was started in February of '95. We have tracked sales on this list since then, with a few sales from '93 and '94 included. I count 110 sales of used 5o5s, with 1996 being the largest sales year. Something like fifteen used 5o5s have sold so far in 1997. Check out the 5o5s for sale (and 5o5s recently sold) list at URL: http://old.int505.org/old_site/4sale.htm Seven New 505s Delivered in the US in past Twelve Months, More Than in Years!More new 505s were delivered in the US than in years... Some of the new boat high lights are...Waterat sold new 505s to College Sailor of the Year 1994, Tyler Moore, and College Sailor of the Year '95, Ryan Cox. Waterat has built five 505s in the past 12 months (one for Australia)! Rondar Raceboats sold three new Rondars into the US, one to intercollegiate All American sailors Nick Trotman and Mike Mills, and another to 505 and Finn sailor Dave Shelton and Bruce Edwards. There is more interest in new Waterats, Rondars, Australian Kyrwoods, and Karl's Boatshop 505s, as well as the newer used 505s from the UK. We believe the seven new USA 5o5s and the addition of the four late model used 505s from the UK is the largest increase in the US 5o5 fleet since the late '70s or very early '80s. This is quite a contrast to three years ago, when we were getting about one new boat a year in North America. New Home for New York City/New Jersey and Pennsylvania 505 Fleet? After checking out several locations, John Wyles, Stergios Papadakis, Fred Liesgang & Dave Anderson (enthusiastic new owners of Parker 4936), Warren Mangen and other area 505ers have selected Sandy Hook Bay Catamaran Club as a new base. Area 505ers have now met at Sandy Hook twice, and the ring leaders have joined the club. Sandy Hook:
cons .
For a full report on the second Sandy Hook visit, and plans for a
June 1st event and a fall event there, check John Wyles' report at URL: Recent NA Fleet growth:1996 was a great year for North American 5o5 fleet growth, and the trend continues in '97!. The Texas fleet continues to grow, with at least three more boats going to Texas in '96. WAY TO GO!! The Indiana University Yacht Club will be a 505 fleet in its own right; they now own five 505s and are negotiating for two more; at little over a year ago, they had only one! AWESOME! Two more 505s were sold into Indiana (outside the University Yacht Club), and the first Annual Hoosier 505 Regatta was held in '96. The recent Hoover Spring Regatta had 14 entries, by far the largest in years! Florida has also seen some growth, as has Hampton VA. The LA fleet has recruited 470 campaigner and Olympic trialist Bob Little, and US Laser 1996 Olympic representative Nick Adamson. A number of people had given the Seattle 505 fleet up for dead; it turns out rumors of its demise were greatly exaggerated. Alan Johnson tracked down area 505 sailors (many are new to the class after buying "Classic" 505s) and has organized some events. Alan has fifteen area 505s on his list, a number of which turned out for the first event, several other events are planned..... As reported above, the dormant New Jersey fleet has been revitalized by John Wyles, Sterg Papadakis and others, and now has a home at Sandy Hook, NJ. 505 web sites:In case you have not been keeping up, the 505 class now has the following web sites:
There is also a Denmark '97 Worlds site at: 505 e-mail list server now over 350 people:The 505world e-mail list server continues to grow, and is now over 350 people in over ten countries. One of the best things about the e-mail list is that newcomers to the class - and prospects - can get their questions answered. A number of people who recently bought 505s and joined the class have mentioned the e-mail list server and the 505 web sites as key reasons for getting into the class. Another benefit is the much better communication between 505 sailors in different countries. The numerous people outside North America expressing interest in sailing the 505 Midwinter Championship are a good example, another is the exchange of tuning information. To join the e-mail list, send a message with a subject (in lower case) of subscribe to There are several other 505 e-mail lists including:
Early Spring Events in Europe:The UK 505 association apparently had a successful Sailboat '97 dinghy show. More recently Mark Upton-Brown/Ian Mitchell won the 85 5o5 Europa Cup (France) event, while '96 World Champions Paul Towers/Dan Johnson won the 60 5o5 UK Inland Championship. The Swiss team of Betschen/Jacot narrowly defeated Kalle Nilsson/Barne (SWE) (racing Kalle's 17 or 18 year old Lindsay 5o5!) at the 2nd of the Europa Cup events on Lake Garda... there were 64 5o5s racing.... the Swiss team of De Cerjat/Hollinger were 3rd. Europa Cup France

Kai Kaiser/John Badtke were 2nd, just ahead of son-and-father team Dylan and Mike Breton. Bristol 505 RegattaTyler Moore/Scott Ikle won the first New England regatta, May 17-18, in HEAVY air! Good turnout despite much of the New England 505 fleet being off in England winning the UK team racing Championship Wilson Trophy. Bristol Report at URL: http://old.int505.org/old_site/97brirep.htm. Ali Meller/Allan Johnson got revenge on Henry Doug/Amthor (winners at Bermuda Race Week), with Meller/Johnson winning the event, Jim Englert/Thad Melton were 2nd in their brand new Waterat, the Amthors 3rd, and Gary Bodie/Kevin Eley 4th. Congratulations to Steven Brown and Allan Freedman for finishing every race - this was only their second event in 7535 - despite challenging conditions on Saturday. Report at http://old.int505.org/old_site/97htrep.htm. Looking AheadGearing up for 1997 5o5 World Championship in Denmark:The 1997 World Championship is August in Denmark. Details are available on their web site at http://users.cybercity.dk/~ccc12869/worlds97.html. Aside from all the European 505 countries being represented, I know a number of Australian teams are going and several US teams. Are you going? The 1998 World Championship is September at Hyannis, Cape Cod USA! Free Container Shipping for East Coast 5o5s to/from the NA Championships!Howard Hamlin and Mike Martin have arranged a free 48 foot trucking container and shipping from the East Coast to Long Beach and return, for the North American Championship. Thanks to SeaLand for their support! Tom Kivney is coordinating from the East Coast end. With the container and perhaps some multi-boat trailers, we could have over 12 East Coast 5o5s at the Long Beach North Americans, the largest cross-country showing at a North Americans in quite some time. The North American Championship is July 7th-11th at ABYC in Long Beach.New Fleet CaptainsThe American Section Executive Committee - Class Officers and Regional Coordinators - has been meeting via e-mail to discuss and resolve issues. The first outcome of this dialog is the decision to reaffirm the importance of local 505 contacts - fleet captains. While this is subject to change, our current lineup of Regional Coordinators and Fleet Captains is: Region I - Tom Kivney
Region II - Macy Nelson
Region III - Graham Alexander
Region IV - Kem King
Region V - Don Smith
Region VI - Alan Johnson
North American 5o5 Schedule Available on Web:A consolidated North American 5o5 schedule is available on the 505 NA Web Site at URL: http://old.int505.org/old_site/97regstb.htm. There are already 85 events listed for 1997! If you cannot browse the web, contact an American Section Class Officer or Regional Coordinator and ask for a copy. New 505 Builders:Karl Anderson - Karl's Boat Shop on the Cape - is apparently building the first boat using the all plastic Lindsay tooling. This tooling was last used to build the all plastic Lindsays being raced by Tom Kivney, Shona Moss Lovshin/Steve Lovshin, Michael Hoffman and Terry Neff.Members of the re-born Seattle fleet are rumored to be interested in acquiring the Ballenger or Moore 5o5 tooling in order to build some 505. At the same time, a Midwest syndicate has plans to build an initial four 505s, and has arranged to share the Lindsay tooling with Karl Anderson. Another midwest builder has expressed a strong interest in building 505s. The International 505:With over 1200 members in 18 countries, the International 505 class is the largest and most active two person high performance dinghy class in the world. Despite its exceptional performance, the 505 is relatively easy to sail; but a challenge to sail well! It is raced by Olympic medalists and club sailors, men and women, juniors and seniors, on lakes and on oceans, in drifters and in 35+ knots. Many of the best known names in International Sailing have raced, or currently race 505s. For further information on the International 505 or the International 505 Class, contact: Ali Meller and point your browser to http://old.int505.org/old_site/
