Proposed Alterations to Spinnaker Dimensions

At the Annual General Meeting held at Quiberon, July 1999, the members present voted overwhelmingly to authorise the International Executive (IEC) to arrange trials with a view to bringing forward a proposal to modify the dimensions of the spinnaker.

Subsequently, a sub-committee was formed comprising of the IEC and members of the class who have already been actively experimenting with variations to the existing spinnaker dimensions. Based on experience so far the IEC wish to encourage experimentation assuming the following revisions to the existing Measurement Rules:

7.0 Spars

7.2 Mast

7.2.4 The highest point of entry onto a block, sheave or fairlead for the spinnaker halyard shall not be more than 5950 mm above the deck.

8.0 Sails

8.4.2 The following dimensions shall not be exceeded:

Head to clew ................................................6000 mm

Head to centre of foot measurement ...........7300 mm

Greatest width .............................................4500 mm

8.4.3 The half width shall be not less than 75% of the foot length.

There will be no requirement for experimental spinnakers to carry numbers.

Note:

The above are felt to be the maximum viable dimensions. As under the existing rules, it is likely that the fastest designs may be within these dimensions. The view has been expressed that the main gain will be from a taller, narrower spinnaker rather from than one which is simply bigger.

The IEC will allow a relaxation of the existing spinnaker rules for two races during the pre worlds in Durban. It encourages National Associations to give similar dispensation for events under their jurisdiction to ensure that any new designs can be evaluated under competitive conditions alongside the existing.

National Associations are asked to notify the International Office of the events in which use of the larger spinnaker is sanctioned and then advise of the conclusions drawn.

The intention of the IEC is to obtain as wide a cross section of views based on actual experience of using a different spinnaker under racing conditions, before deciding whether to bring forward a proposal for a rule change at the AGM in Durban in November 2000.
