505-INFO 2-2021: Summary of season 2021
To: Swedish 505 Fleet Past and Present Sailors and Supporters
This is an email to you who own a 505, to you who sail or sailed 505, to you who we have had contact with regarding 505 sailing in recent years, to you who are the 505 association's partner / sponsor and to you as we believe has an interest in the 505 class. You are welcome to pass on to others who you think may be interested .
Hi 505 enthusiast!
It is late autumn and we can sum up another really intense 505 season.
The competition season started sadly with the relocation of Robline SWE
505 CUP 1 in BKSS, canceled CUP 2 in Borstahusen, relocation of Kieler
Woche and then the worst - canceled European Championships in
Weymouth and canceled World Cup in Bermuda. BUT the Corona situation
turned around and it was a nice German championship in Warnemünde, a
wonderful International Swedish Championship (SM) in Åmål, a good CUP
regatta in BKSS, a successful Nordics in Espoo/Finland, an exciting CUP
finish in Stockholm and a fun West Coast championship. Maybe a little
too "back-heavy" competition season, but that will change for next
season
.
Briefly about the content of this 505-INFO: We start with some
Christmas gift tips, the important Racing program for 2022
and a few lines about the WC application 2024. Then follows a
summary of 2021 with the training in Träslövsläge, a little about
the various competitions and the final result in Robline SWE 505 CUP
2021. We also write about the trim weekend with Holger Jess with
13 Five Oh Five's rigged indoors and look forward to the Boat Show,
5 - 13 February 2022 in Gothenburg. We are happy to accept help
there! We are pleased that Gefle SS has chosen 505 as the club boat
and the success of "The International 505 Day". You also get tips on
e.g. The FB group "505 Sailing", about the international 505 database
that is only growing and about how you do to get a picture in the big
505 book "Simply the best". Lastly, you will find news about more
active boats, advance information about boat lending 2022, the
possibility of renting a double trailer, tips on connecting to the
local fleet to get the most out of your 505 sailing, how to get help
with buying / selling and info about the membership fee for 2022.
We hope, of course, that you want to continue to be, or want to become a
member of the Swedish 505 Association. The fee for boat + crew is now
505 SEK - it feels like a really good sum! But there are alternatives -
e.g. to be a support member that costs at least 100 SEK. For
convenience, you can now Swish all payments to the association number
123 375 56 42. Of course you do not have to be a member to get 505-INFO
and to get help from the association with your 505, but we will be very
happy if you want to support the 505 class and the work of the
association.
If you read the entire INFO letter, you will find out most of the 505
sailing in Sweden right now
.
Much pleasure!

Comfortable sweater in beautiful college quality. Costs 500 SEK. Sizes

The 505 sticker - a small but nice Christmas present
We have taken advantage of the classic sticker with the logo from the
505 origins. The crown comes from Coronet, the slightly longer
predecessor to the 505, which was the fastest of all at the Olympic
competitions in La Baule in 1953. The duckling comes from the Caneton
class, the class that ordered a smaller Coronet, intended to be called
Caneton Rapide (fast), but as direct became the stand-alone 505 class.
These brands have been combined with the nice logo for the WC 2020 that
Katarina Boyd designed for us.
A nice sticker, of course to give away as a Christmas present but also
to put on the boat, car, bike, mailbox, pram, front door, etc…
Available for purchase for 25 SEK per piece or 4 pieces for 75 SEK.
Around Gothenburg we can hand out the sticker, but if you want it sent
to your home, then it costs 12 SEK extra, i.e. 37 SEK or 87 SEK. Pay to
SWISH - do not forget to enter the address to send to if you want home
delivery.

There is interest in a new edition of the 505 jacket.

The road to 505 WC 2024 in Varberg
Now we have, to say the least, a qualified organizer for the WC 2024
- Varbergs SS. Their wonderful
European Championship event in 2015 is still being talked about.
We have started to anchor the World Cup plans with 505 sailors
around the world during the 2021 season and now, since the autumn,
the formal application is being completed with financial
calculations and everything.
Decisions are made at the annual meeting of the International 505
Association (AGM) during the World Cup in Cork. We have the support
of many countries that feel that now is Sweden's turn and that
Varberg means really nice sailing waters!
Do you want to be involved and support the event financially,
e.g. as a partner, or with work effort - get in touch!
In the wake of the 2021 season:
Training camp April 17-18 in Träslövsläge
It became a camp! A little different with all the walks and all the
food outdoors, but with good weather it went great. Most important
of all - we got to train together. There were thirteen teams from
all over 505-Sweden, but no Danes due. quarantine rules. The
atmosphere was expectant. Maybe it would be a good competition
season, after all. Fredrik Fock - one of Sweden's best 470 sailors -
trained us and we got to try some new and good exercises. Fredrik
even seemed a little eager to step into a 505 himself. Next year we
will continue the tradition of a joint spring camp in Träslövsläge -
THANK YOU Träslövsläge BS for always making us feel welcome. In 2022, we
hope for Danish participation as well. Take the chance to test the
upcoming World Cup waters on April 23-24, 2022! Book in the calendar
right now!
German championships - the biggest competition of
the year in Europe
This year's largest 505 regatta, 44 boats from 5 nations sailed the
German Championship as part of Warnemünde Woche. Three Swedish teams
measured their strengths against international opposition, important
not least in view of the canceled European Championship. Tomas
Grundel / Johan Strömdahl succeeded best with a total of 9th place
after five races with results in the top 10. Peter Bökmark / Martin
Persson finished 12th, but had a fourth place as the best result and
another 2 races in the top 10. Third Swedish team, Thomas and Oskar
Lundberg, were 26th overall. Wolfgang Hunger / Holger Jess clearly
won before Jan Philipp Hoffmann / Felix Brockerhoff and with Lutz
Stege / Frank Fellen in third place. Three Germans first, but in
fourth place it was French through the experienced team Philippe
Boite / Marin Carnot. Hunger / Jess is the team that has performed
best on major international regattas this
year. But they have e.g. not met Pete Nicholas / Luke Payne, AUS,
nor the 2019 European Championship winners Roger Gilbert / Ben
McGrane, GBR, or the best Americans. We have to wait until Cork 2022
to find out the current balance of power between the best 505
sailors in the world.

SM in Åmål - Malin Broberg / Johan Röök is the
first mixed team to win the "Hornet", but Peter Nicholas / Luke
Payne became International Swedish champion
Our SM 2021 was one of the three most international 505 competitions
in the world this year, with participants from 5 nations. The other
two with the same internationalization were the German Championships
and Kieler Woche. Nice company
!
It was a Swedish Championships with a lot of wind for the 29 boats
that came to the start - one day had to be canceled due to too harsh
weather. This year we sailed internationally at the Swedish
Championships, which means that those who win will be International
Swedish champions and if it is a foreign crew, there will be no
place in the Sailing champions. Best placed Swedish crew wins the
challenge prize "Hornet" and is the best in Sweden. A bit awkward
and something we will avoid in the future. In any case, it was a
real sailing party on the water and also a great regatta dinner party on Saturday
night with almost everyone present - so much fun! Peter Nicholas /
Luke Payne, AUS, is one of the world's best 505 teams - especially
in high winds. They were hard to beat and clearly won the
competition. Very instructive for the rest of us to see them and
discuss trim with them. However, they were beaten in two sub-races
out of eight. One victory went to Per and Lars Wester and the other
to Malin Broberg / Johan Röök. Malin and Johan came second overall
and thus best Swedes. They now stand as Swedish champions in the
mortgage on the classic challenge prize "Hornet". This is the first
time a mixed crew is the best Swedish team at a Swedish
Championships. Great fun - CONGRATULATIONS! Also in third place was
a mixed team - Fabiola and Michael Wonterghem from Denmark. Second
among the Swedes were Peter Bökmark / Martin Persson (overall in
fifth place) and third Ebbe Rosén / Olle Wenrup (overall in sixth
place). Ebbe and Olle's result impressed in weather conditions
that are no longer among their favorites. The winners of the last
three years, Tomas Grundel / Johan Strömdahl, KSSS, were not lucky
and they are now making a planned break in their 505 venture, in
favor of family life. 505-Sweden hopes for a come-back in not too
distant time! Good arrangement by SS Åmålsviken who nicely managed
to run a combination event with the 606 class - a big THANK YOU!

Danish championships - talk about community!
Collaboration with the Danish 505 sailors has been and is very
important for the construction of the 505 class in Sweden. This
year, four Swedish boats crossed the strait to Holbaek and the
Danish Championships (DM). Two German teams were also present. To
get the DM requirements together, Sweden lent a team to Holbaek
Sailing Club and vips was a formal DM in port - what a collaboration
.
The Danish topsailors are difficult to overtake. Jörgen and Jacob Bojsen
Möller lined up with a brand new boat, which they had just finished
and won despite that. Five victories out of eight possible. Jan
Saugman / Christian Limbrecht Mogensen in the silver place was 4
points behind. Malin Broberg / Johan Röök were the best of the
Swedes, in fifth place. Wonderful fellowship together with the Danes
and a successful event. All results at:

Robline SWE 505 CUP in BKSS - a full hit for Per
and Lars Wester and a women's crew on the podium
Light winds unlike the Swedish Championships and then it became
really even. Per and Lars Wester sailed convincingly and had
fantastic headwinds as they usually found the pressure better than
everyone else. Four victories out of seven possible, but also two
fives and one four. However, no one could handle it and it was a
victory with 2 points before Peter Bökmark / Martin Persson. Johan
Röök did not have the opportunity to sail both days, which is why
ex-Olympian Agneta Engström was recruited as a crew to Malin
Broberg. Malin and Agneta made history by being the first women's
crew on the podium in a CUP competition in Sweden. They finished
third, three points behind Peter and Martin. This also meant that
BKSS sailors seized all podium places at home. For Per and Lars, it
must have been an extra nice feeling to be able to succeed fully -
they have many fourth places in major competitions. BKSS is the club
that knows how to get satisfied sailors with small resources - good
courses, proper food after the races and a welcoming atmosphere!
THANKS! The results from the competition can be found at:

Kieler Woche - moved Euro Cup sailing with Anders
Nilsson / Jacob Reuterskiöld as the only Swedes
This mammoth regatta, which was one of this year's two completed 505
Euro Cup regattas, was moved to the beginning of September.
Unfortunately the same date as Robline SWE 505 CUP in Björlanda
kile. A Swedish boat chose to go to the regatta, the Malmö team
Anders Nilsson / Jacob Reuterskiöld. It was position 15 in the 27
boat strong field. Anders Nilsson has written about the regatta and
analyzed his own efforts in a very nice article on his blog "Öresund
regatta".

Silver at the Nordic Championships in Espoo,
Finland, by Per and Lars Wester
Two Swedish teams took the ferry over to Helsinki to sail this
year's Nordic Championships. The same thing was done by double
Danish world champion Jan Saugmann with crew Christian Limbrecht,
certainly with a victory in sight. However, it did not turn out that
way. The weather did not benefit the organizers and the sailors.
Saturday's competitions had to be canceled due to lull and fog. On
Sunday it was still foggy, but now there was wind - varying in both
strength and direction. After two races, Per and Lars Wester were
equal to Saugmann / Limbrecht and after three they were in the lead
with two points. It was late afternoon and the ferry was booked. Per
and Lars took a chance and took part in the last sailing. A foggy
story with a track change that everyone except the Finnish team
Rosemarie Hartman / Tuomas Laurila missed. Hartman / Laurila thus
won the race and sailed up from fourth to first place overall. First
win for a mixed team at NoM. It was a nice second place for Per and
Lars and the Danish team had to settle for third place. The other
Swedish boat, Galen Mack / Colin Treseler finished fifth in the
15-boat field.

KSSS Olympic Regatta - was a tough finish to
Robline SWE 505 CUP
Martin Fridh / Mats Dahlander from Skåne ended the light wind CUP in
BKSS with a victory and started in the end in KSSS with a second and
a first in the really tough conditions at Baggen. Impressive! So far
they were equal to Peter Bökmark / Martin Persson, but then it was
capsizing for Fridh / Dahlander and tough to get to the finish line
within the time limit. Peter and Martin, together with Malin Broberg
/ Johan Röök, were the only teams that really managed the strong
southeasterly winds of 10-15 m/s, without capsizing. After day 1,
Peter and Martin led before Malin/Johan and with Martin/Mats
in place 3. Peter and Martin also took the lead in the overall CUP,
on the same points as Malin/Johan but with more wins. On Sunday
it was just as windy and some teams chose to stay ashore to save the
material. Malin and Johan started with a victory in the first race
and took back the overall lead, but when one of their spinnaker
booms broke, they had no chance to match Peter and Martin, but
finished second in the two final races and in total. Peter and
Martin won both the final two races and the regatta. Thomas and
Oskar Lundberg from the home club KSSS sailed evenly just below the
two in the top and finished third in the regatta. Thank you KSSS for
allowing us to have our CUP sailing during the KSSS OCR regatta.

Robline SWE 505 CUP 2021 - with new winners: Peter
Bökmark / Martin Persson
SWE 505 CUP was held in 2021 for the eighth year, this year with
Robline as a partner - a big THANK YOU for nice support! It was
exciting until the last sailing. The victory margin for Peter and
Martin was a single point ahead of Malin Broberg / Johan Röök in
second place. Malin and Johan won the CUP in 2017, then followed
three years of victories for Tomas Grundel / Johan Strömdahl and now
it was Peter and Martin who pulled the longest straw. It was their
first victory. The CUP has been won five times by teams from the
East Coast Fleet and three times by teams from the West Coast
Fleet. The Skåne Fleet best position to date is a silver
medal in 2015. This year's edition was the second largest in the
CUP's history - 29 boats participated in at least one sailing. The
only time there were more was in 2018, when 32 boats took part in at
least one sailing. SWE 8926, Ebbe Rosén / Olle Wenrup are the most
successful CUP crew - they have two victories and have only been off
the podium once.
The CUP's final result 2021 is available on the website: https://www.int505.se/images/web/Robline...
Björlanda Kile SS points sailing 2021 - a prestige
win for Per and Lars Wester
In the spring, only training was allowed and there were many
training races on Monday evenings in BKSS. With Lasse Bjerke in the
coach boat most of the time, it was very rewarding training. In the
autumn it became sharp mode with competition again. 17 different
boats participated in the 6 evenings' 13 races. 112 boat launches
have been made, on average, there were 9 boats per evening and at
most 13. Per and Lars Wester won, 4 points ahead of Fredrik Hansson
/ Sven Flood. In third place Malin Broberg / Johan Röök. Think what
fun you can have on a regular Monday evening. Thank you BKSS for
constantly running the activities for us 505 sailors during the
pandemic!
The result is available at: http://www.bkss.se/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Poangsegling-5o5- 2021v3.png
WC = West Coast Championship - it could not be
easier and more useful!
The corona pandemic caused the west coast sailors to resume the
tradition with a really late end to the season, their own World Cup.
Yes, ie. a West Coast Championship. This year's edition, October
22-23, gathered 10 teams from Skåne (south of Sweden) to Gothenburg in Björlanda
kile. Light winds and mild weather for the season were the external
conditions. There were five even, fun and intense races, wonderful
after-talk with snacks in the clubhouse and useful prices = fruit!
The first four races had different winners. Peter Bökmark / Martin
Persson won first, Malin Broberg / Johan Röök second, Tomas Berg /
Urban Lagnéus third and Fredrik Hansson / Sven Flood fourth. Peter
and Martin finished with a victory in the last race which had to be
shortened due to. lack of wind. They were also overall most even and
won by six points. Second Tomas and Urban, 10 points, third Fredrik
and Sven, 11 points and four Malin and Johan also with 11 points.
Many THANKS to BKSS who lent escort boats, buoys and clubhouses -
you are invaluable for the 505 association's activities in the west
.
Also a big THANK YOU to our own super organizers, Lasse Bjerke and
Per Wennersten and their assistants this time, Alain Dupuis and
Göran Börjesson.

13 boats and 31 people on an indoor fitness
weekend with Holger Jess, 6-7 November
This was an activity planed for autumn 2020 which we had to postpone
due to the Corona situation for a whole year. Johan Calvert lined up
with the venue at his company
Smart Inrednings premise in Kungälv.
Quite impressive with 13 Five Oh
Five's indoors, almost all of which were rigged. Holger Jess is
"German careful" and told about all the important dimensions for a
good basic trim and how to then arrange the trim functions.
So much information and so much that can be improved. Absolutely
amazing that Holger Jess, four-time world champion, came and helped
us - THANK YOU! Holger said that when he started sailing 505,
Långedrag was the world's 505 center. Krister Bergström and Kalle
Nilsson sailed there - two of the very best 505 helmsmens in the
world at that time.
For those of you who did not participate or want to immerse yourself
further, there is a lot of material about basic trimming for a 505,
how to make technical solutions for trimming systems etc. collected
on our own website:

well as systems for spinnaker hoisting by the crew and much more.

The first club boat for Gefle SS
Gefle SS got its first 505 in the spring of 2021 when the chairman
of the club, Carl-Magnus Sångeclint, bought the classic Lindsay boat
SWE 8352 from Finland. In the 2022 season, the Swedish Championships
and Nordic Championships will be sailed in Gävle 8-10 July under the
collective name "No Emission Race". It will be a big event that we
hope will attract many 505 teams, both Swedish and foreign. In order
for the club to start more of its own 505 sailors, Gefle SS has now
bought an updated older boat as a club boat. This means that both
young people and adults can feel really good sailing at home and
hopefully it will lead to more Five Oh Five's in Gävle, at best
already to the 2022 season
.
A fantastic fun initiative by Carl-Magnus Sångeclint and Gefle SS.
The international 505 Day - 5th of May - a
world-wide success
International 505 Day was a success. There were 505 races starting
with 5.05 on three continents. We had lots of nice 505 pictures that
were posted on FB and it was a big international 505 meeting on
Zoom, with about 120 participants from at least 15 countries on five
continents. The meeting was held together by Russ Clark from the UK
in a very skilful way. Lots of 505 joy and energy spread. The idea
of May 5 as International 505 Day was first launched by Ian Gregg in
Australia in 2015, but had no impact. Unaware of that, Diana J
Sewell in the UK took an initiative in 2020 to post photos on FB on
5 May. This year, the International 505 Association took the idea
further and launched it widely within the 505 world. International
505 Day has come to stay!
We look forward and backward:
505 at the boat show in Gothenburg 2022
Now the plans are rolling on too full for a physical boat show 2022
in Gothenburg. The 505 association is invited and we will be present
and show the best dinghy available - 505.
The fair is becoming more traditional, with sailboats in the C-hall
and there we now get a place together with e.g. ILCA and several
large Swedish keelboats. Exciting! You are warmly welcome to the 505
stand on 5 - 13 February. We also need 505 sailors who want to be
involved and market the class during the fair days. The 505 sailors
in the west will be invited especially for this, but we are of
course very happy if someone else also wants to come to Gothenburg
and stand one day in the stand. Admission is free and there is time
to walk around the fair as well. Get in touch if you want to help in
this way.
505 - the book "Simply the best" will be published
this summer. Do you want to be in the picture?
Now it is ready in script form - the book about 505, the boat, the
class and the people, from when it was constructed to today. British
Dougal Henshall has written and he publishes weekly news from his
work with the book and its extensive pictorial material on the
website "505-book".

Cave into 505 history, or keep track of the latest
505 results worldwide
Polish 505 sailor Marcin Pietrzak is constantly working to
supplement and develop his database of all boat people and results
in the 505 world, from 1954! Are you looking for results from
regattas, or wondering about a boat's make, or who sailed a
particular boat, or what results a particular sailor achieved… ..
YES, there are lots of entries in this impressive database. Feel
free to botanize in it - it is available at:
https://5o5.iworks.pl/ If you have old results lying around that
are not included - send them in. Marcin really wants to create the
complete 505 database.

Record number of Five Oh Five's bought / sold
In 2021, the association has knowledge of 25 purchases / sales and a
total of six new boats have come to Sweden while one has been sold
to Finland. Four boats have been imported from Denmark and Finland
and in two cases foreign sailors living in Sweden have brought their
boats here from the beginning. Of the four new boats, three are new
teams and one has changed to a newer boat. During the year, a boat
was sold to a sailing company - Gefle SS - see above! Exemplary! In
three cases, active teams have sold to new active teams. In total,
the sales mean that there will be more active Five Oh Five's in
Sweden
The association would have known if there were more good boats for
sale, more boats could have been sold.
The 505 Association vision, goals and strategy
We will have a finished document soon. It will be presented in the
next 505-INFO. We received lots of comments this spring and had a
good discussion at the annual meeting. It is close to a final
document, but we are not quite there yet. Sailing activities have
been prioritized
.
We lend the Association Five Oh-Five's for
training, trial and competition in 2022
The loan boats SWE 8585 and SWE 8694 will be lent out next year,
much like this year. This means that we do not lock them into a few
teams without many people getting to know them, for one or a few
weeks. Maybe during a training camp, or during a competition. Of
course, competition loans require experienced sailors who borrow. Do
you know someone who wants to test a 505 next season? Email now
[email protected]
It costs nothing to borrow a boat within Sweden. For competitions
abroad, we charge a small charter fee. Lending normally takes place
in Skåne, Stockholm and Gothenburg. We do not let the boats go far
away on our own. Our experience is that you should sail with others
and get tips and help from those who already know in the beginning,
to quickly get into 505 sailing.
Double and single trailer that can be borrowed for
cheap money
The Swedish 505 Association has a trailer and now also a double trailer for
its loan boats SWE 8585 and SWE 8694. These trailers are of course
still a lot and can then be borrowed. The single trailer costs SEK
100 per day, a maximum of SEK 500 for a loan opportunity and the
double trailer costs SEK 150 per day, a maximum of SEK 1,000 for a
loan opportunity. Maybe an idea to borrow the double trailer for
co-transport to some international regatta?

Are you connected locally and get part of your
fleet info about training, socializing, etc.?
The association's ambition is to
strengthen the activities locally, in the three fleets we have.
Among other things, through more coordination of the training try to
create local races and when
the Corona situation also allows to have gatherings during the
winter with different themes. What happens in the local fleet
does not always appear on FB or in 505-INFO, but is communicated
locally between the fleet managers and the active teams.
Therefore, we recommend that you are connected to the local
fleet, so you do not miss any fun that happens
.
On the west coast, Tomas Berg is responsible for the
fleet. A Messenger group "Training Björlanda" is used here. West
coast sailors who are not in it email
[email protected]
and we will fix it.
In the south, Tomas Franzén is in charge of the fleet. An
email list is used here for communication. If you as a sailor in the
south do not receive local notifications about training etc. - email
[email protected]
and we will fix it so that you are included in the list.
On the east coast, Galen Mack is in charge of
the fleet.
Here, the WhatsApp group "505-träning på Baggen" is used as a
channel for communication. East coast sailors who are not included
in it, email
[email protected] and enter your phone number, and we will make
sure that you join the group.

good sailing, but it also means a lot to others' views of the 505
class and to the resale value of our boats. By being a member, you
provide important support to the association and the business. We
try to help everyone who has a 505 to get the most out of their boat
and we work actively for the growth of the 505 class.
