Hi again all!

Yesterday we made the third danish test with a larger spinnaker.

test #1

test #2

Spin.: New design with following size:
  • Luff 6.00 (5.90)
  • Bottom 4.50 (3.96)
  • Half height 3.96 (3.46)
  • 24 m2 (21 m2)
  • Wind: 12-16 knots
  • Sea: 2-3 ft.
  • Temp. minus 1 degrees celcius.
  • Helm 75 kg
  • Crew 80 kg (Mikael Ahrbom)
  • 4 boats practizing - short up & down courses

Figures in ( ) is the old one from last two tests.
Rig: Standard Superspar M2, only change is that the spinnaker halyard is raised 85 cm above its normal position.

First experience:
It´s BIIIIIG!!!!!...... Compared to the first spinnaker we made, this one is more powerfull, and we were about 2 knots faster on a downwind (trapezing) compared to a standard spinnaker. Even if we were rounding windward mark as last boat 20-30 meter behind the first, we were normally first to round the leeward mark (if we made the jibes right (new tactics!!)).

Jibing was very easy because low pointing and high speed. Still no structural problems with the mast despite the fact that the spinnaker was even bigger.

The spinnaker was very easy to control on the downwind, but it was definitely not easy to sail a close reach with it in these conditions. It can be a bit fuller and wider on half height, but else, its about to look interesting on an up & down course.

We will be back with further information.
