Prepreg Freo 505

7/5/2002

Dear Ali,

Thought you (and the international website) might be interested and amused by this picture of the all carbon/nomex prepreg deck and sidetank molding from the latest Fremantle 505. This 22kg structure is being held aloft by Brett Burvill who is building them for us. His fabricators include a craftsman from the McLaren F1 racing team which uses similar technology to build the bodies of the latest F1 machines.

I have also included a picture of the mast-step/forward bulkhead and chute molding in similar material which weighs about 3 kg. The shell of the hull weighs just 25kg. Despite the low weight there is more carbon in these boats than the wet-laid boats and this combined with the better epoxies and structural improvements make these boats far stiffer and stronger than conventional all carbon boats .
